Hours spent on activities by different age groups in Someland

The table shows the hours spent on activities like watching television or video, socialising with four or less people, socialising with four or more people, doing individual exercise, doing group exercise or sport and watching movies in cinemas by different age groups from teens to 70s+ in Someland.

The activity of socialising with four or more people is decreasing from 350 for teens until 25 for 70s+.

For teens, watching television or video has the highest hours spent because they like to watch entertainment programmes. However, from age 20s to 30s the hours spent has decreased because they are too busy with their works, but climbing back from age 40s to 70s.

On the other hand, doing group exercise or sport decline from teens to 70s+. This is cause by the ageing process that occurs to human being that leads to the declination in joining outdoor activities.

Based on the table, we can conclude that when we become older, we will do less outdoor activities because our body become weak as we do not have enough energy to do more activity. Government should organize a campaign such as “10,000 steps a day” to encourage community to join other outdoor activities.

Finding Main Ideas

4 January 2012
As miss Zu asked us to complete our BEL260 file at the previous class, so today miss Zu check for our file one by one but she feel upset with our class as most of us does not completed the file. After that, we learned  how to find main ideas and topic sentence.

MAIN IDEAS
l  The main idea sentence of a paragraph tells what the paragraph is about. The other sentences are details.
l   In finding the main idea, ask yourself these:
–        What idea is common to most of the text?
–        What is the idea that relates the parts to the whole?
–        What opinion do all the parts support?

Examples :
1.      There are many uses for this great product. Some mix it with chocolate to make cake icing. It is the main ingredient in some milkshake mixes. It will also kill rats in small amounts.
-          The first sentence introduces the main idea and the other sentences support and give the many uses for the product.

2.      The movie Apollo 13 was a blockbuster for the summer of 1995.
It is an exciting story about space exploration. In the movie, the stronauts
get in trouble while they are trying to return to Earth. People in the audience
are on the edge of their seats waiting to see what happens. What makes it even
more exciting is that it is a true story.

            In this paragraph:
·         the topic is the movie Apollo 13
·         the main idea is in the first sentence: Apollo 13 was a blockbuster for the summer of 1995

TOPIC SENTENCES
1.      The topic sentence is usually first, but could be in any position in the paragraph.
2.      A topic is usually more "general" than the other sentences, that is, it talks about many things and looks at the big picture. Sometimes it refers to more that one thing. Plurals and the words "many", "numerous", or "several" often signal a topic sentence.
3.      Detail sentences are usually more "specific" than the topic, that is, they usually talk about one single or small part or side of an idea. Also, the words "for example", "i.e.", "that is", "first", "second", "third", etc., and "finally" often signal a detail.
4.      Most of the detail sentences support, give examples, prove, talk about, or point toward the topic in some way.

EXAMPLES :
1.      A topic sentence can sometimes be found as the first and the last sentences in a paragraph
One can avoid sleep problems by following a few simple guidelines.  First, don’t drink alcoholic beverages or drinks with caffeine before bedtime.  Next, do not exercise within three hours of bedtime.  Finally, plan a sleep routine.  Every day, go to bed at the same time and get up at the same time.  If you follow these guidelines, you will be able to avoid problems with sleeping.

2.      A topic sentence can appear at the end of a paragraph (as a summary or a conclusion)
To avoid sleep problems, you should not drink alcoholic beverages or drinks with caffeine before bedtime.  Another way to avoid sleep problems is to not exercise within three hours of bedtime.  A final way to prevent sleep problems is to plan a sleep routine.  Every day, go to bed at the same time and get up at the same time.   As can be seen, sleep problems can be avoided by following the above simple guidelines

Non Linear to Linear Text Writing

3 January 2012
Today we learn about non linear to linear text writing. The non linear writing is an interpretation of information presented graphically. This is some of information that we have study in the class

*Interpret a diagram, table, charts and graphs and present the information in your own words.
—  Organise, present and possibly compare
e.g. Money people spend on different forms of entertainment.
—  Describe stages of a procedure or process
e.g. the stages of human evolution.
—  Describe on object or event or series of events
e.g. How the water cycle works.

Types of non linear texts
      1.Graphs/ Charts
Pie Chart

Line Graph
Bar Chart
   2. Tables

Non Linear writing’s Formula:

TITLE

1) OV + CI
2-3) KFs
4) P(i) + P(ii)

A SIMPLE NOTES.....

   •         Firstly, extract the TITLE from the question and underline it.
•         You may write in just 1 paragraph but 2 or 3 paragraphs are also accepted, generally it depends on what kind of stimuli are given. Begin each paragraph with phrases like:
i) According to the...
ii) Based on the...
iii) With reference to...
•         OV- What does the stimuli present? Answer: a bar graph, diagram, pie chart, pictograph, newspaper headline or article, some notes etc.
CI- What is the general trend of all the stimuli combined? Answer: Increasing, Decreasing, Consistent or Fluctuating (NOTE: These are the FOUR main trends
•         For the second and/or third paragraphs, you need to identify the Key Features (KFs) which are the MOST OUTSTANDING ideas from the stimuli.
•         Notes: Do not make any external ASSUMPTIONS
•         FOr the closing, it consists of minimum two sentences, Prediction (Pi) and Proposal (Pii).
•         P(i)- What future trend can you predict? Answer: If x happens, then y will continue to increase, decrease, stabilise or fluctuate.
P(ii)- What recommendation can you propose? Answer: The government/company/United Nations can...
*P(ii) is not compulsory but it will differentiate the higher bands from the lower ones.
